45 KING (NYC/New Jersey)

THE MAIN INGREDIENT celebrate the holiday season with a New York hip hop legend, the 45 KING will make his Canadian debut at Revival on December 12th. 45 KING is historic for his selection of breaks from a wide range of music on 45 rpm vinyl, one of the pioneers as far as looping breaks as both a DJ and producer. 45 KING produced the hip hop staple “The 900 Number”, and as a member of Flavor Unit he produced a portion of Queen Latifah’s debut album All Hail The Queen. Since, 45 KING has produced hits including Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life”, Eminem’s “Stan”, and Diamond D’s “Check One, Two” (co-producer). Come welcome him on his first visit to the TDot.

And now for something completely different…

A little insight about me. I have a fascination for people that do solitary jobs. Goalies, catchers (pause), DJ’s…they play integral roles on a team but with a certain independence. Stand-up comedians are no different. I’ve been down with stand-up for a minute. I will never participate in an open mic but I can dissect a comedian’s 15 minute set with the same scrutiny as so many of my peers’ mixtapes.

So I’ma put you on to some of my favorite comics. Beyond the obvious Russells, Seinfelds, Eddies, Chrises, and Chappelles of the world, there are so many comics that have worked the circuit for decades that can kill it. Here are a few of them.

BILL BURR (you’ve probably seen him on some Chappelle’s Show skits as a sportscaster)

LOUIS C.K. (pretty edgy material, i think homey is a master in talking about touchy subjects but not going THERE)

DONNELL RAWLINGS (aka Ashy Larry from Chappelle’s show. This dude is on some Delirious business! Apologies for the bootleg quality.)

Expect to see more editions in the coming weeks!

Shouts to my man Taurean, who told me I needed to step my posting game up beyond flyers and mixtapes.

This Thursday: MF DOOM RELEASE PARTY @ SOCIAL EXPERIMENT!

full_doom_mensa_tor

From a personal standpoint, the man like MF Doom has been one of my favorite artists and I never even knew it for a while.

It took one long ass road trip to Boston with the homies Masia One and Jesse Ohtake to put on to his unique wordstyle, obscure cultural references and just overall weirdness. I took in his entire catalogue from Operation: Doomsday to Madvillain. King Geedorah’s Take Me To Your Leader was my favorite. I was blown away. He was the complete antithesis of all the club rap BS I dealt with on Friday night. MM…Food came out the next year and that became essential listening too.

Shouts to the good people at Fusicology as we get to celebrate this new release of of Metal Fingers’ musical rarities. it’s gonna be a fun night.

Do join us!

____________________________________________

DOOM is one of the most original and uncompromising voices in hip-hop. From his work in the 90′s with the seminal KMD to his legendary releases under a variety of aliases including MF Doom, Madvillain, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Dangerdoom & more, his prolific body of work has always valued artistic integrity and creativity over anything else. As numerous and varied as his albums are, DOOM also has a thick catalog of guest appearances, remixes, non-album tracks, & vinyl only singles. For the first time, Unexpected Guest presents many of these hard to find tracks as a mix CD, executed and overseen by the Super Villain himself.

With a list of co-conspirators which includes marquee level names such as Talib Kweli, Ghostface & GZA as well as underground heroes Vast Aire, CountBass D & Kurius, the music on this disc highlights DOOM’s ever-present trademark wit and taste for raw and ominous beats. “Sniper Elite” sees the emcee united with the late J Dilla, and is one of the many tracks featured that has yet to see an official CD release. The album will also feature a never before heard live version of DOOM’s classic “I Hear Voices” from the Operation Doomsday album.

Peppered with his signature comic book dialogue and vintage sound clips, Unexpected Guests presents a treasure trove of DOOM obscurities which should shed light on material that even some hardcore fans may have missed. It’s a frenetic, virtuosic look at a true hip-hop original.

And last but not least is my dude Bozack Morris of BLACK RAP who finally released his specatacular 70′s slow jams mix BLACK ZODIAC. He passed me a rough draft of this a couple years and he was definitely on the right track as I had listened to that joint at least 30 times. Alas, the project was put on the back burner for reasons unknown, until recently when he unearthed it on the interwebs for all to enjoy. Many recognizable samples straight from OG vinyl. Highly recommended.

Tracklisting:

01. Tom Brock “The Love We Share Is The Greatest Of Them All”
02. The Temprees “(Girl) I Love You”
03. Gladys Knight & The Pips “And This Is Love”
04. Eddie Kendricks “Intimate Friends”
05. Charles Wright “A Mother’s Love”
06. Bettye Crutcher “A Little Bit More Won’t Hurt”
07. The Montclairs “Do I Stand A Chance”
08. The Edwards Generation Featuring Chuck Edwards “You’re The One For Me”
09. Norman Connors “You Are My Starship”
10. Barry White “Playing Your Game Baby”
11. Willie Hutch “I Can Sho’ Give You Love”
12. Barbara Mason “Give Me Your Love”
13. James Gilstrap “Move Me”
14. The Isley Brothers “Footsteps In The Dark”
15. The New Birth “Patiently”
16. Kool & The Gang “Summer Madness”
17. Johnny Bristol “Do It To My Mind”
